Conference: Heritage Past, Present and Future: Celebrating the Centenary of the 1913 Ancient Monuments Act

16-17 September 2013

The Arts and Humanities Research Council‘s Care for the Future theme, English Heritage, National Trust, and the Society of Antiquaries of London are co-sponsoring a conference to  commemorate the centenary of the Ancient Monuments Amendment and Consolidation Act of 1913, reflect on  heritage protection in Britain since 1913, and discuss the future of  heritage protection in Britain. While attendance at the conference is by invitation, we will hold a free special evening debate open to the public which will focus on the government’s role in caring for our nation’s heritage at RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD) on 16th September at 7:30pm. The debate was available on live stream, and you can watch the video here.

Debate Programme: This debate will bring together leading thinkers on heritage to debate the following motion: ‘This house believes that future care for our heritage requires Government as our champion.’ Professor Maurice Howard, President of the Society of Antiquaries of London, will chair the debate. Speakers include Simon Thurley (CEO of English Heritage), Sir Simon Jenkins (journalist and Chair of The National Trust), Stephen Bayley (author and cultural critic), Robert Hewison (cultural historian), and John Howell (MP for Henley-upon-Thames).

Additional Information: We will be disseminating conference proceedings and recordings where possible, please see our video footage of the debate below.
